Smiles Are Free

In October Momma will have been gone for eleven years. I miss so many things about her. The way she answered the phone with an exaggerated h-e-l-l-o. Going to church together. Me cooking Sunday dinner while she supervised from the rocking chair. Her telling Eric to come on over here and give Grandma a big squeeze, then slipping him a dollar. The pure joy and excitement she had whenever you gave or did something for her. She loved it no matter if it cost a few cents or hundreds of dollars.

She was so proud of her daughters. She would brag Linda was a school teacher, and stopped by everyday morning and after school to see her. Mary was in the Air Force, and traveled all over the world. Her baby girl Bettie was a wonderful nurse. But her true love was her son-in laws. Us girls were o.k., but those guys could do no wrong in her eyes. I have to admit they were very good to her. They treated her like the little Princess that she was.

But the main thing I miss is her amazing smile. She had one of those smiles that just lit up the room when she walked in. Her smile was contagious Even if you were down or in a bad mood, you always felt better after being around her for a while.

Momma always said smiles are free, and you should give them out whenever you can. Her smile is the first thing people mention when we talk about her. What a wonderful way to be remembered. The best complement I have ever received is when people say I have my Momma’s smile. Maybe someday they will say I remember Mary Barker, she always had a smile on her face. I know she is in heaven spreading that beautiful smile all around. Momma I love and miss you so very much.

Beautiful, heart-warming piece you’ve written! Your words brought tears (and a smile) to my eyes! What to be remembered by? A smile is a most wonderful thing to be remembered by. Can’t do much better than that. She must have had a heart that sung along with that smile on her face! Thank you for sharing.
