San Antonio Texas

I am having a blast visiting with my son and his family at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio Texas. I didn’t realize how much I missed the military life style until Saturday night when Larry hosted a party and BB-Q for around fifty of his co-workers and their families.  I have always enjoyed meeting new people from different cultures and backgrounds, and this was no exception. One of my favorites was a lady from Guam. She even asked me to be her travel mate to Jerusalem. She’s here visiting her daughter, who is in my son’s unit.

While my son was busy grilling the food, the men were shooting hoops, or just sitting around B.S.ing. Larry gathered the little kids together in their back yard that has a very steep slope. This would have been perfect for sledding, if it wasn’t July in the middle of a desert.  Larry being the smartest Barker(self- professed), found some cardboard boxes that were broken down and had the kids slide down the hill. The kids had so much fun.  It was good to see that they can play without being connected to a computer, T.V., or any of the other toys that doesn’t require an imagination.  The kids also had water balloon fights, went swimming, and later played Wii dance party. They were worn out by the time they went home. It was ten before Malia and Garrison woke up the next morning. Great food, good company, wonderful day. It doesn’t get better than this.

Sunday we visited the Chinese Sunken Garden. I have pictures of my mother –in-law and I there when I was expecting Larry. That was and still is one of my favorite places to see in San Antonio. Later we had a fabulous lunch at a Thai restaurant near the post. We were so wiped out from the heat; we went home and took a nap. Thank God for naps and air conditioning.

Saturday we will be driving seven hundred miles to Fort Morgan Alabama, which is on the Gulf Shores.  My husband Garry, grandson Eric and his girlfriend Kayla, and grandson Matthew will be driving down from Missouri to join us. We rented a house on the beach for a week, and are looking forward to being beach bums for awhile. The only thing missing is the rest of our family, Lorrie, Rick and their gang. Next year, we are thinking about renting a bigger house and having everyone come down. Can you imagine how much fun we will have with eighteen of us together?  I’m sure we will be making many more great memories to share.
