Ginny’s Story Part 5

First thing each morning Momma would preheat the oven and start preparing the biscuits for our breakfast. It wasn’t long before the kitchen started to have most god awful smell. We didn’t know where the terrible stench was coming from. We opened the window and door to let in fresh air, hoping to help rid the order. The only thing that accomplished was it made the room cold. The smell was getting stronger and stronger.

Momma remembered she had to put the biscuits in the oven. She opened the door and found the source of the stinking odor. A big black snake had found his way into the warm oven. He was getting all nice and comfy, ready for a nap when things got a little too heated in there.

Lucky for us baked black snake wasn’t on the menu for breakfast that morning. It was the last time that old snake slept in our oven.

That wasn’t the only encounter we had with snakes on the farm. The school bus pulled up in front of our house at 4 o’clock each afternoon. I ran to the front pouch as fast as I could. I was about to open the door when the biggest black snake I had ever seen fell down from the top of the door landing on the ground in front of my feet. I started screaming, and ran through the house trying to find someone to help me. Daddy was sitting in the back room smoking his pipe. I said Daddy hurry; follow me to the front door. There is a huge black snake blocking the doorway.

I found out that day my great big strong Daddy was terrified of snakes. He stood about six feet from that monster stomping his feet, and waving his arms trying to get the beast to move. The snake stayed put, watching in amusement at my Daddy’s carrying on’s. After a few long minutes, it finally grew tired of the entertainment and slithered away.

I slept with Momma and daddy for a long time after that. I don’t know was protecting who, but those old black snakes never visited us again.
